All praises are for Allah who is the creator of everything present in the Universe. Any command given by Allah should be followed in all cases because Allah never tells to do anything which may harm humankind. All the Islamic principles have been made for the benefit of people but we don’t realize that unless we face difficulty and then the only solution left for us is to seek Allah’s mercy and help. Like many other issues, celebration birthdays is also a current issue which is widely discussed among people especially Muslims, and they often show their concern that celebrating birthdays is allowed in Islam or not? Due to this concern they ask other Muslim scholars about this issue and get mixed responses and answers about this issue.
As Muslims, we should always keep in mind that the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the best example and guidance for us. Allah has mentioned in Quran in Surah Ahzabthat the best example for us is to follow the messenger of Allah i.e. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Now if we talk about the issue of birthday then read about the life of Prophet thoroughly and you will not find a single example of celebrating birthday. Neither the Prophet, nor his companions ever celebrated their birthdays.
Although celebrating birthday is not a major sin. The problem is that people waste a lot of money on the useless functions of birthdays which highly displeases Allah Almighty. I remember last year my cousin had a birthday and her husband booked the splendid umrah summer 2017 for her to give a surprise on her birthday. Now the way they both celebrated that birthday was definitely one of the most memorable thing of their life. The point here lies, that although there is nothing wrong in celebrating birthdays in Islamic ways, but try to avoid wasting money on useless functions that can displease Allah Almighty. May Allah show us all the right path towards virtue so that we can all spend our lives according to the commands of Almighty and his Prophet (peace be upon him).
